Kindergarten 2 Acceptance
Welcome to K2 Acceptance! Based on our class name, we accept everyone for who they are. As every child is different and develops at a different rate, we as teachers teach them to accept and help each other.
For Term 1, the topic was secondary colours. For Term 2, the topic was the needs of a plant to grow and for Term 3, the topic was carnivores.
Term Overview
Term 1
Theme: Rainbow
Topic: Secondary Colours
During a class activity, children were curious on what would happen if different colours were mixed together. Some children were surprised that they were able to get a new colour just by mixing two different colours such as mixing blue and yellow to get the colour green. This sparked off their interest in learning about secondary colours and how to mix certain colours. Thus, this term’s focus was on letting the children learn about secondary colours.
Term 2
Theme: Plants
Topic: What plants need to survive
The children went out outdoors for their physical activity. Children saw different types of trees and plants and suddenly one of the children asked if plants need to eat food to survive just like how children need to eat food to grow. Another child said that plants do not need to eat as they have no mouth. Hence, this term’s topic focused on the characteristics needed for plans to survive.
Term 3
Theme: Animals
Topic: Carnivores
Children went on a field trip to the singapore zoo and saw a variety of animals. One of them saw a tiger being fed meat and asked questions on why those tigers were only being fed meat while children need to eat a mix of vegetables and meat to survive. This experience was seen as an opportunity to teach the children on the types of animals such as carnivores.

Lesson Documentation
Term 1 Theme: Rainbow
Topic: Secondary Colours
K2
Lesson Overview
Teacher Nic started the lesson by showing and demonstrating to the children that they are able to obtain the colour green by mixing two colours; blue and yellow.
Teacher Nic then use a worksheet with 3 circles, 2 of it being primary colours and 1 of the circle being a secondary colour for children to mix.
After completing the worksheet, children will start on their art pieces by using the colours that they have mixed. After which, the children will take turns to share with the class on their artwork through a show and tell session.
Lesson Objectives
Children will be able to:
-
Learn about the different secondary colours
-
Successfully mix 2 different colours
Teaching Technique used
Demonstrating & Modelling:
According to Sallusu and Ransom (2014), Modelling is an instructional strategy in which the teacher demonstrates a new concept or approach to learning and students learn by observing. Research has shown that modelling is an effective instructional strategy in that it allows students to observe the teacher’s thought processes. Using this type of instruction, teachers engage students in imitation of particular behaviors that encourage learning. Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them on what to do.
Importance of Demonstrating & Modelling in our school:
Demonstrating and modelling helps children to get a better understanding of the activity. However this should not be used during activities which requires creativity as demonstrating limits the way children think and should be used properly such as in this case, demonstrating what to do on a worksheet helps children to better understand how to approach this activity.
Teaching Technique:
Demonstrating & Modelling
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 1:
-
plan and show desired behavior for children to model
-
show and model rules during tuning in
-
teacher uses talking voice when he is setting the rules which helps children to model his behavior
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 2:
-
use clear instructions with children
-
instructions used are labelled by steps and are short for children
-
makes it easier to understand and remember
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 3:
-
Must be familiar with the steps involved in the demonstration
-
teacher prepares the material needed for this lesson beforehand
-
plans what to do for the lesson before starting
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 4:
-
Provide children with lots of opportunities to practice the skill or techniques
-
the worksheet used in this lesson have multiple rows
-
helps children to practice identifying and mixing colors
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 5:
-
Break a skill or task into small sequential steps
-
the lesson was broken down into small steps
-
teacher uses labels such as firstly so that children know that there is an order for this activity
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 6:
-
Physical demonstration by mixing the paint
Demonstrating & Modelling Strategy 7:
-
Review with children what they have learnt,eg ask questions
-
ensures the demonstration and modelling is effective
-
was used during end of lesson
